Diving Platforms in the Texas Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary / by Amber Jackson

Platform 389

115 miles offshore

400 feet deep

We chose to dive platform 389 in Texas Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary because it is a relevant example of a functioning artificial reef on an oil and gas platform. Since 1980, these platforms in the Flower Garden Banks have fostered the growth of a valuable ecosystem, from the invertebrates that call the steel beams of the structure home, to the hammerhead sharks that school in its shadows.

We will be joining experienced rig divers from Texas Park and Wildlife on a dive trip Monday, May 12-15th, 2014. Our objective is to capture the vibrancy of the rig acting as an artificial reef with GoPro cameras. Follow us on our Texas expedition via Instagram!
