Diving Platform Gina / by Amber Jackson

Platform Gina

3.7 miles offshore

95 feet deep

We chose to dive platform Gina as it is a relevant example of a functioning artificial reef on an oil and gas platform in California. Since 1980, platform Gina has fostered the growth of a valuable ecosystem, from the invertebrates that call the steel beams of the structure home, to the rockfish that use the jacket of the structure as a nursery for their young.

We will be joining experienced rig divers from Dr. Milton Love's lab at UC Santa Barbara to dive platform Gina on Monday, March 24th, 2014. Our objective is to capture the vibrancy of the rig acting as an artificial reef with GoPro cameras. Follow us on our Santa Barbara expedition via Instagram!
